2024 Summer Study Abroad
Sustainable Urbanism in South Korea
May 13, 2024 – May 27, 2024
Six Planning students (three undergraduates and three graduate students) joined the Sustainable Urbanism in South Korea Summer Study Abroad program in 2024 (faculty lead: Dr. Misun Hur). The Community and Regional Planning program at ECU has hosted this program for four years since 2019.
The program has had three main focuses: environmental innovation, transportation innovation, and traditional and world architecture. This year, it extended its focus by adding “coastal eco-tourism” in Kangnung, a coastal city located on the east coast of South Korea.
The program offered a full of exciting events–from a former landfill site to a resource recovery facility (waste treatment facility), from buses and subways to autonomous vehicles and a bullet train, from a palace built in 1405 to a 123-story tower, and from Seoul metropolis where 10 million people live to a coastal town of Kangnung with eco-tourism.
