Podcasts: Housing Market Analyses of NC Counties

Governmental agencies have used various ways to spread their messages out. Press releases, news conferences, and website news posts are traditional ways.  Social media have become powerful in recent years, and podcasts have shown great promise. Podcasts are highly accessible and easy to consume, cost- and time-efficient, and portable. It has powerful social networking potentials. Several governmental departments try podcasting to get people to tune in. It is beneficial for students—soon-to-be public servants—to be familiar with podcasts as consumers and producers.

In Spring 2021, students in PLAN4025: Housing and Neighborhood Planning (instructor: Dr. Misun Hur) at East Carolina University produced podcasts about the Housing Market Analyses in six NC communities. Undergraduates selected five rural counties in eastern NC (Beaufort, Brunswick, Chowan, Jones, and Tyrrell), while graduates selected Buncombe County. Most of these counties—other than Buncombe Co.—either have an outdated analysis or most likely have never been researched due to their ruralness and geographic disadvantages. The research includes the population and household analysis, economic conditions, home sale market and rental market analyses, and COVID-19 impacts on housing.
