Undergraduate Research

Heather Mosesso (Junior) and Brady Golden (Sophomore) presented their research, “Post Occupancy Evaluation of the ECU Student Center,” during the 2019 State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS) on November 23, 2019 at Duke University. This research was supported by the ECU Undergraduate Mini-Grant.

“A Post-Occupancy Evaluation is the feedback of a building’s performance after initial use. In recent years, POE’s have become increasingly used and important for public projects. Obtaining feedback on the performance of the building can help increase the buildings functionality. East Carolina University recently added a Main Campus Student Center to its campus in Spring 2019.The purpose of the research is to analyze the feedback of the ECU Student Center. Research questions are two folds: 1) How is the building being used? 2) Is the building satisfying the users’ needs? From the literature review, we developed significant variables to be included, which mainly focus on accessibility, comfort, and aesthetics. We also met with the Director of Student Centers to hear the critical aspects that went into the design and efficiency of the building. As the research method, we conducted an onsite and online survey with students, faculty, staff, and visitors (n=135). Findings showed that the building satisfies the users in all aspects we asked.  However, users suggested improvements on noise control, landscaping, and sidewalks.”
