Practicum Report (pdf)

  • Full name: Mason Cole Mattox (Class of 2023)
  • Double Major: BS Community and Regional Planning, BA Political Science
  • Hometown: Ayden, NC
  • Interest in Planning & future goals:I’ve loved planning ever since I found out that planners have the extraordinary task of changing and reshaping the world around us when there are improvements to be made. I’ve been especially interested in Environmental Planning, Land Use Planning, and Emergency Management. My future goals are largely oriented toward hazard mitigation, especially in Eastern North Carolina where hurricanes and flooding remain prevalent challenges.
  • Favorite thing about the department: The close-knit network of students and alumni. I’ve been ‘stuck’ with the same peers for nearly all of my planning classes, and I’m so grateful that this has been the case! Having the same friends each semester has helped me to feel like going to classes was the same as going home to something familiar. Because of this, I feel as if we will be able to communicate with each other well into our future careers, whenever needed!
  • Mason served as President of the Student Planners’ Action Network during his senior year. The planning faculty nominated him for an Outstanding Student Award at the American Planning Association (national award).
  • Mason will begin his career with Pitt County Planning Department starting in May 2023. He plans on staying in the area, close to his family.
