From A Pirate’s Seoul

“After much preparation and determination, a small group of students including myself embarked on an educational journey to Seoul, Korea.

Guided by Dr. Misun Hur, this study abroad program prioritizes teaching students various planning-related topics through direct experience and a refreshed worldview.

I focused my studies on the balance between historic preservation and urban regeneration, or as I like to say, where the new meets the old. Before departing for this study abroad, I had a vague idea that we would visit many older, traditional, and historic sites. I also had a vague idea that we would see many newer developments around the city of Seoul. I did not expect, nor was I prepared to see just how incredible and inspiring these places would actually prove to be.

I was caught completely off guard by Korea’s mesmerizing history as we climbed and explored a medieval hilltop fortress village, walked the grounds of several Palaces, and stopped for a quick bite in many traditional markets. We enjoyed several highly unusual, yet scenic parks, investigated a zero-carbon building, and ascended to new heights in one of the tallest buildings on earth. We also marveled as we visited several companies and institutes which are successfully leading the world in new technology and innovation.

In my opinion, being able to visit just one of these places would have made the entire trip very worthwhile. We were fortunate enough to have seen so much more than just one. Having been able to see and experience Korea will not be something that quickly turns into old memories and photos! This journey will certainly leave a positive impact on students as myself for many years to come.

The best part of my experience is not what I ‘got’ from Korea, but what I plan to ‘give’ back to my own community, thanks to the new skills, ideas, and viewpoints that I have gained.”
